Everclear Alcohol - the True Story

Everclear alcohol is a popular brand of grain spirit. This drink is available in concentrations of 75.5% alcohol and 95% alcohol that are termed as 151 proof and 190 proof. In contrast, other liquors contain lesser amount of alcohol. For example rum and vodka have around 40% to 60% alcohol, which amounts to 80-120 proof. Since Everclear is a neutral spirit, the congener’s level in Everclear is relatively lower. Everclear was listed by the Guinness Book of World Records in 1979 as the ‘most alcoholic drink’. However, alcohol entries were banned from that book later.

Due to its high alcohol content, it is illegal in most countries to sell Everclear alcohol. In the United States, California, Hawaii, Florida, Idaho, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, and Washington states had banned the sale of 190 proof Everclear. However, the 190 proof Everclear is legally sold in the other states and in several military stores in US. The 150 proof Everclear sale is allowed in the states of California, Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Minnesota, North Dakota, West Virginia, Washington, and a few other states.

In Canada, Everclear selling is legal in Alberta. It can be bought with a permit for research use, industrial use, or medical use in British Columbia. However, sale of Everclear had been banned in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Since Everclear is highly potent with a concentration of 95% alcohol, it is advisable not to drink it straight. It is added to other drinks such as fruit juice, energy drinks, soft drinks, and iced tea. The nutrients in 1 ounce of Everclear alcohol had been estimated as 190 kilocalories, 794 kilojoules of energy, and 26.9 gms of alcohol. Other nutrients like fats, carbohydrates, proteins, sugars, fiber, cholesterol, and sodium are completely absent in Everclear.

Use of Everclear Alcohol in Daily Life

Everclear is used in cooking to extract full flavor of ingredients. Medicinal tinctures, as well as certain spice extracts are prepared using Everclear. The herbs are soaked in Everclear for several days and the solid material is strained out to obtain the extracts. Many backpackers use Everclear as fuel in specially made alcohol stoves. Since Everclear is non-toxic, it can be stored in ordinary cookware without fear of contamination. Further, it burns clearly. Comparatively, methanol and isopropanol have higher toxicity and their use in stoves must be avoided. The other applications of Everclear include homemade perfumes and antiseptics. Since Everclear evaporates very fast and leaves very little residue, it is used to clean electronic parts like printed circuit boards, heatsinks, etc.
